Oscar Matthiesen (Danish, 1861–1957) was a prominent master of academic realism and monumental painting.

Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts—where he earned the prestigious Gold Medal in 1884—he later studied in Paris under master muralist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and trained under P.S. Krøyer. Celebrated internationally for his anatomical precision and mastery of fresco techniques, Matthiesen held professorships in both Berlin and Copenhagen and represented Denmark on the Venice Biennale committee.

His monumental works and state commissions are permanently anchored in Denmark’s most significant institutions, including Christiansborg Palace (home of the Danish Parliament), Copenhagen City Hall, and regional art museums across Scandinavia. His work reflects rare technical rigor from the golden era of European academic painting, making his pieces enduring institutional-grade acquisitions.
