Are used oak furniture pieces a sustainable choice?

Yes—reusing solid oak furniture is among the most sustainable choices you can make, as the wood is already part of a high-quality piece of furniture, avoiding the resource consumption associated with new production.

What characterizes solid oak furniture?

Oak is one of the heaviest and most compression-resistant wood types used in furniture making—significantly more durable than pine, beech, or veneer. Over the decades, its color naturally deepens into a rich golden patina that cannot be replicated in new wood. Most older pieces are finished with either oil or lacquer: oiled surfaces can be refinished periodically, whereas lacquered finishes are more durable but harder to repair locally. Always check for cracks at the joints and examine the type of finish when buying second-hand.
