He was a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for many years (1920–1953) and also served as its director. He is particularly known for his depictions of society's outcasts in Copenhagen and for having taught great names such as Asger Jorn and Ib Spang Olsen. This work depicts an elderly woman with a doll in her lap.
